The work of the Political and Commercial section traditionally forms the basis of the Embassy's work. It involves negotiating, analysing and reporting on political and economic developments in Australia, building up a network of contacts, taking care of practical arrangements for state and ministerial visits etc.
The Embassy administers a small Local Co-operation Fund. The objective of the Fund is to complement other Finnish development efforts in the region in furtherance of poverty alleviation and economically, socially and environmentally sustainable development while strengthening the local civil society in particular.

Consulate of Finland in Sydney protects the interests of Finnish nationals in Australia. Its services include providing passports and notary services, visas for foreigners travelling to Finland, and assistance to Finnish citizens in distress.
In addition to the Embassy of Finland in Canberra and the Consulate in Sydney, Finland has Honorary Consuls based in 7 other cities in Australia and 4 Honorary Consuls in New Zealand.
